Rescue the Boys: Ending the Pressure to Become Providers Too Soon

Ending the Pressure to Become Providers Too Soon

As a man, society expects you to take care of your family, your household, your friends, and even your neighbours.

But increasingly, that same expectation is placed on the boy child too early, too heavily, and too often.

Why is a 15-year-old so worried about making money?
Why is a 20-year-old defrauding others just to survive?
Why is a 30-year-old taking his own life because of financial pressures?

The answer lies in what we’ve been telling our boys all their lives:

“You need to make money so you can take care of us.”
“You need to earn so people can respect you.”
“You need to start building your future now, or you’ll be a failure.”

From childhood, boys are saddled with unrealistic and harmful expectations. At an age when they should be focused on school, friendships, and self-discovery, we burden them with adult responsibilities. We plant the seed of financial urgency before they even understand their own identity.

The result?

A generation of boys who believe they are their family’s only ticket out of poverty.
* Boys who grow up too fast, thinking it’s their duty to provide.
* Boys who fall into cybercrime, depression, or worse, in a desperate attempt to meet expectations they were never ready for.

Let’s be clear:

At age 15, a boy should be learning, building friendships, and dreaming and not chasing money or hustling to fix adult problems.
At age 20, he should still be growing, learning, and exploring, not crushed by the pressure to succeed financially.

The boy child is not your breadwinner.
He is not your Plan B.
He is not your escape from hardship.

We must rescue our boys from the toxic belief that their worth is tied to wealth.
We must lift the heavy weight of premature responsibility and remind them that their only duty right now is to grow, learn, and become.

Join Elizabethan H&H Foundation in changing this narrative. Together, we can lift the burden and rebuild a future where boys are allowed to grow without guilt, without fear, and without pressure.
